Who was Joseph by profession?
What a question, you say, of course, a carpenter. And you are not quite right. All four Gospels, as you know, are written in Greek, and the word “tecton” is used in relation to a craftsman from Nazareth, that is, simply “builder”. When translating the New Testament into European languages, including Slavic, the hero turned into a carpenter simply because our houses were built mainly of wood – until the 19th century. But the situation was different in Galilee, where even now it is hardly possible to find a couple of wooden buildings. All dwellings are either simply cut down in rock like artificial caves, or are made up of its fragments on the foundation. So, probably, Joseph worked primarily as a bricklayer and only occasionally, on special orders, as a carpenter. He most likely found a wife in Jerusalem during one of his pilgrimage trips. And then … What happened next, everyone knows and no one knows. In any case, we will not discuss the Immaculate Conception. Recognizing his child, Joseph raised Him, taught reading, writing and craft. Today in Nazareth, in the modest church of St. Joseph, which is supposed to be built above the house where he lived with his family, you can see the workshop and table that served as a workbench for father and Son. There, visitors are shown elegant stained glass in the Neapolitan style. On them, the modern master portrayed the Redeemer as he rarely appears before us: 17-20 years old. Moreover, in the features of a young man and an old craftsman, there is a clear similarity. The Gift of Mary Until the time of Jesus came, He undoubtedly lived in Nazareth, the hometown of his teacher. He walked along the same streets that were here 2,000 years ago, built houses, about the same as crowded in the city today. In general, the modern appearance of the small homeland of Christ is hardly very different from the ancient one, except, of course, the imprint that Christianity itself left on it. Thanks to him, the West Galilean town remains an exotic spot in the 21st century both on the map of Israel and in the Arab-Palestinian community. Sunday is considered a weekend. The total number of parishioners of all churches is just over half the population, that is, exceeds the number of Muslims, and almost all of the local followers of Jesus are Arabs! There is, however, another version: not the Arabs, they say, this, but the Arabic-speaking descendants of the Greeks, Phoenicians, Jews … When the warriors of Allah first captured Palestine, they burned with such hatred for the Byzantine Empire that they urged all new subjects to urgently forget its language . And then they were much more tolerant of religious differences, and thus brought to life the Christian community, speaking the language of the Prophet. Such a breadth of the cultural spectrum gives today’s Nazarenes a lot of advantages: they have many children, are temperamental and always ready for mutual help, like Arabs, and also are deprived of prejudice, independent and full of individual dignity, like people of the West. In few places you will see how an oriental girl gets married in a modern dress with a slit almost to the waist. Well, and finally, the famous “gift of Mary”, about which Antonin Martyr, who visited Christ’s homeland, wrote in the VI century: the Holy Virgin gave the inhabitants of her city dazzling beauty for many generations, and it is especially visible against the plain-looking faces of the neighboring Galileans. I can testify: there is some truth in this. Although it is possible, Nazarenes simply dress better and know how to apply makeup. And the girls from neighboring villages and kibbutz, on the contrary, do not attach importance to such “nonsense” (a friend of the repatriate told me how the neighbors advised her to buy clothes as faded as possible on the market – “the color will not last longer”). But let us return to the small homeland of Jesus, to the Synagogue church … One can imagine the scene when He began to read from the Torah at this place (in turn, every adult man had the right to do this) and announced his great destiny. What started here! “Is this not the son of Joseph and Mary? Didn’t his relatives marry our sons? What is he telling us! .. ”And Jesus had no choice but to say,“ There is no prophet in his own country ”, to go towards his amazing fate – to the sea of Galilee, where they did not know him yet. Witnesses of this day dispersed and, most likely, soon forgot about the strange young man. In any case, today even merchants from the local bazaar with large golden crosses on their hairy breasts do not know how to get to the gates of the Synagogue church, which was set up at the place where the prophecy was read. Meanwhile, these gates are three steps from the stalls with goods. Galilee – the “central district” of the kingdom of heaven. Every winter, citizens of the Jewish state come together to TV screens and radios in order to find out the most important news: how much did the water level rise in the main freshwater reservoir of the country this year? Almost all of Israel drinks from the Sea of Galilee (better known as the Sea of Galilee). The higher the water rises, the better the water supply system will work.
