See what I tell you …

Jerusalem is half of Israel, the city is unique, there is no other. So take care, old man, a film, ”a friend who settled in Israel and was familiar from his native Zaporozhye advised me. He was right. Behind Tel Aviv, a town with the exotic name of Raanana, a resort town of Natanya, Haifa, Akka, Lake of Tiberias and the city of Tiberias … And finally, Yerushalaim (as it is called in Hebrew). An ordinary bus station, an ordinary residential area, modest, like a concrete hut, the house where my friend settled. Having thrown my belongings in his apartment, I went to the center, to Jaffa Street. This and the adjacent streets were built many decades ago. Immediately struck by the eye: a great many men in yermolks, many Arabs, many tourists and pilgrims. It turns out that in a year about a million people come here from all over the world, this is more than two times more than the inhabitants of Jerusalem. But Jaffa Street somehow suddenly stopped, the road slid down. I lifted my head and froze: not far away, on a hill, in the rays of the setting sun, the Old Town was golden with powerful walls, high towers. It was so unexpected! The contrast between the squat streets behind and the “fortress” majestically rising to the sky was so sharp that I stopped in amazement. So my first acquaintance with Jerusalem took place. No matter how they call him! The eternal city – because the first mention of it is about four thousand years old; a city of three religions – because it is the first city of Jews and Christians and one of the main places of worship of Muslims after Mecca and Medina. They also call this city Golden – because traditionally it is decorated with white and pink stone. The more I learned about Jerusalem, the more I became convinced of the truth of the words of my friends: there are countless monuments of history, religion, and art. But not only they interested me. With a camera, it is better to go alone and on your own. I climbed West and East Jerusalem, the Old City (“Do you want to get a knife in the back?” My friends were perplexed when I went to wander the Arabian streets), trying to catch the living life of this ancient city and avoiding taking pictures that would surely attract attention tourist. So, “look what I tell you,” as the Israelis say … There is Ben Yehuda Street in Jerusalem. What kind of “artists” you will not see here, what kind of songs you will not hear! This colorful soloist with a hat (banjo, harmonica, vocals), along with colleagues in a street orchestra, plays quite modern music. On the streets of Israeli cities, towns, kibbutzim, a large number of military and simply armed people are striking. What to do? .. Those who live in this troubled land need to be able to protect themselves. Although – how the Uzi machine does not fit with the commandment “Do not kill!” The Laws of Moses. These girls in khaki clothes are unarmed and welcoming. They help police keep order on the streets and roads. In general, women here undergo compulsory military service. However, this new – and, presumably, temporary phenomenon – does not cross out one of the main traditions of the people. From time immemorial in the Jewish families a special place was occupied by the mother – the core of the family and the keeper of the hearth. “Baruch Hashem” – “Glory to God,” as the Israelis say, this tradition is still alive. In yeshivas, religious schools, boys study here, who, like their ancestors who went to the same schools a century and a half ago, wear pace – the pride of believers. One evening I got lost. The funny thing is that it happened in the center of Jerusalem. What’s the matter: just flandered along a modern street past the rich and bright shop windows – and suddenly it seemed to have failed in the last century? Narrow streets, courtyards and courtyards, windows with strong bars, doors and doors with stars of David … Men in long-necked black frock coats and hats, women in wigs – because only her husband dares to see the hair of a married woman. Some kind of mysticism. People appeared unexpectedly, for some reason moved quickly, as if by dashes, and suddenly disappeared at the doors and gates. It turned out that I ended up in the Mea Shearim quarter, which has not changed since the 19th century: those who adhere to the Orthodox currents of Judaism live there. They reject everything secular, guided only by religious regulations, laws and prohibitions. It was striking: most of the inhabitants of the quarter are wearing glasses, many are slouching. Apparently, the day and night reading of the holy books and tireless prayer are affecting. … It was drizzling light rain. Many men put plastic bags on their hats, apparently, a hat for them is as sacred as Saturday. Not far from Ben Yehuda Street is a place where young people love to meet. I peer — European faces are all the same … Jews who came from the former USSR are called “Russians” here, from America “Americans”. Ethnic communication (if this expression is acceptable for one people) is a characteristic feature of the life of Israel, its problem, if you like.
