The deadest in the world …

No matter how surprising it may be from the outside, Israel is alive, and our economy has begun to recover, including the tourism industry. At least, this is the official statistics. Moreover, it was Russian tourists who played a significant role in this rise. Either our former compatriots are the most reckless, or they are so killed by the lives of the last decades that there was nothing to lose, or the level of indifference among the Russians at the highest level in the civil world, but the fact is that they are coming to us from Russia to admire the Holy Land , breathe her air, plunge into her unique aura. And then to say, is it possible to compare the past 2004 with 2001, when the unshaven shaitan offspring wrapped in untidy rags ruined the Millennium to the whole Christian world? Do not wait now for the next incident for a thousand years! .. And among the many sights of our tiny, but very diverse country, the Dead Sea stands out. Most … Most … It lies in the deepest pit in the middle of all the earth’s land. It has the highest concentration of all kinds of salts. It is the deadest in the world, because in this concentration, nothing survives, not even any infection. Remember the fabulous vessels with living and dead water? Here is the same, dead water, healing wounds, of course, scooped up in the Dead Sea … We live quite close to it. If you take it in a straight line, then, 20-25 kilometers. From the upper floors of our house, in the extreme north-east of Jerusalem, in clear weather, when the sun rolls west, you can even see the water surface. On Saturday, when roads are clear, a car or minibus descends to the shore in about half an hour. But this is a height difference, a kilometer and a quarter: from +800 m Jerusalem to –400 m Dead Sea! I first got to the Dead Sea in early July of the 94th, being a tourist. For us, potential repatriates, the Jewish Agency “Sokhnut” arranged a relatively inexpensive familiarization tour of Israel, with a minimum of amenities, but with a wonderful guide who eloquent in compensating us, however, with a shoveling unpretentious, their lack. Then we drove along the entire coast of the Dead Sea from south to north, stopped on the beach at Ein Gedi, climbed there to the kibbutz of the same name, green in the solution of a mountain gorge. Then we had an ascent (on a lift, but for those who wish enthusiasts on foot) to the ruins of the ancient Masada fortress, hanging over the Dead Sea, built by King Herod the Great to control the caravan routes and subsequently became one of the last and most powerful strongholds of Jewish resistance to the Romans during the Judean War (I century AD). Shocked by our guide’s story about those heroic and terrible events, we somehow softened and, then falling from the insane heat into the cool store of the Akhava cosmetics factory (Love), surrendered to the mercy of victorious saleswomen and consultants … Yes, on the Dead the sea all tourist routes lead to “Ahab”! However, as the experience of the inhabitants of Israel shows, there really can be found healing creams, ointments and other cosmetics made with the use of sea salts, relatively cheap. Cheaper and, most importantly, fresher than in the city. And without exaggeration, the effect of all these drugs is unique. Worth that money! Not far from the northern tip of the Dead Sea in the foothills of the Judean Mountains is another world tourist site – Qumran. This place is famous for the fact that at the end of the 40s of the past century, in the middle of the Israeli war for independence, vessels with ancient manuscripts were accidentally found in the caves there by Bedouin shepherds. In subsequent years, many archaeological expeditions worked in Qumran, which found a huge number of household items and, most importantly, scrolls dating back to the 2nd century. BC – II century AD To date, a significant portion of these scrolls have been studied. They are kept in the Scroll Museum in Jerusalem, part in the National Archaeological Museum of Jordan in Amman, and part in the USA, Great Britain. Most scholars – archaeologists and historians – hold the prevailing view that the Jewish community of Essenes sectarians lived in this place at the junction of the old and the new era, anticipating the early Christian communities with their beliefs and way of life. Some believe it is quite possible that at some point the sect was led by John, called the Forerunner by Christians or the Baptist, and that his cousin Joshua of Nazareth could live among the Essenes for some time … True, there are other points of view regarding the ancient inhabitants Qumrana. In general, the place is curious for both Christians and Jews. I had a chance to read about him back in the 60s in the popular book by G. Stoll “Cave by the Dead Sea” and in the scientific research of St. Petersburg professor I.D. Amusina “Manuscripts of the Dead Sea.” But I got to Qumran only in the 96th. The impression was indelible. I recommend to everyone. Just north of the sea is the Arab city of Jericho, according to Russian tradition – Jericho, it seems the oldest of the known cities of the planet.
